Broadway: Moulin Rouge

Broadway: Moulin Rouge

Although time was tight on our NYC trip, time did allow for a matinee performance of a Broadway musical. When looking through the listings, I wanted to make sure we chose something which wasn’t available to see in London. We’d heard great things about Moulin Rouge so we decided to give it a whirl.

The Al Hirschfeld Theatre, located on West 45 street is in close proximity to Central Park and Times Square.

When entering the auditorium, the first thing that strikes you is the complexity and scale of the set; it’s stunning and that’s before the show has even started….

I must point out at this point, that I have never seen the film of the Moulin Rouge (I’m not quite sure how this has happened, but nevertheless, I plan on rectifying this asap!)

We chose to sit in the Diamond Circle, in the third row of the Balcony. I wanted to make sure we had a good view after travelling so far, and these seats offered a great view whilst still being reasonably priced.

If we were to see the show again, I would consider sitting at one of the tables on ground level. These tickets are higher in price, but we loved it so much - I would consider splashing out further next time.

The energy within this show and the performances were incredible. In the show we saw, we had a few understudy’s, but unless you looked in the playbill, you wouldn’t know any different - the performance was OUTSTANDING.

The music was also a particular highlight for me; I know some people that don’t go and see musicals because they don’t know the music etc, however, this isn’t a problem with Moulin Rouge. There will be parts of songs in there that the majority of people will know. In fact, I loved the music so much, I’ve downloaded the full album.

I don’t want to spoil the show for anyone, so there’s no spoilers here, however, if this version of Moulin Rouge comes to a town near you, then you should definitely consider seeing it. This is in my top two musicals of all time, for sure! (The other is Pretty Woman, in case you were wondering 😉)

I am so grateful that we managed to squeeze this in on our trip. We’re both still talking about it a week later. If it comes to London, we would definitely see it again!
